MYSORE: The Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) here has scotched rumours among sericulturists that "feeding silkworms with leaves of V1 mulberry variety results in frequent breakages in the filaments". In a press release issued here on Wednesday, CSRTI Director S.B. Dandin said certain elements were spreading misinformation about the impact of the mulberry variety on reeling of cocoons, and this could have an undesirable impact on the industry. He said the misinformation was against all established facts of sericulture science and there had been no reports from India or any silk producing country that any particular mulberry variety affected the reel-ability of cocoons. Such relationships had never been reported and studies conducted at the CSRTI and the Karnataka State Sericulture Research and Development Institute, Bangalore, had generated enormous data that supported the efficacy of variety V1. He said rumours were being spread by people jealous of the income being earned by farmers who had taken up large-scale production and sale of V1 mulberry saplings. Contrary to the apprehensions, the mulberry variety V1 had been overwhelmingly accepted by farmers.
