MYSORE: Cotton cultivators in the Mysore region have urged the Government to facilitate direct marketing of their produce. They submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who was in Mysore district on Wednesday. They said textile mills located outside the State procured cotton from them, and hence, the Government should facilitate direct marketing to put an end to the middlemen menace. Members of the Organic Farmers' Association of H.D. Kote called for withdrawal of four per cent VAT and one per cent APMC cess levied on growers so as to benefit farmers, self-help groups and registered societies. Vivek Kariappa and Nanjundamurthy of the association reiterated their demands and underlined that H.D. Kote was listed among the most backward taluks in the State in the Nanjundappa committee report, and hence, the Government should abolish the cess. The association appealed to the Government to formulate a policy to protect the interests of farmers.
