Leadership circle launched in the city

Staff Reporter

It will expose students to corporate practices

CHENNAI : A forum called the Scholars League Leadership Circle was launched in the city on Wednesday to help college students inculcate leadership traits and practise it in their professional life.

Students from arts, science, management and engineering colleges would interact with corporate executives — on the platform provided by the leadership circle — to provide them with the big picture and expose the students to a bigger canvas, to changing corporate trends and get trained in soft skills and attitudes to face interviews, according to the SLLC's spokesperson Madhumati N.

Addressing a seminar held at Anna University to launch the circle, M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman of the Madras Institute of Development Studies, stressed the importance of teamwork and being able to work with and communicate to a multi cultural audience.

He said, "You have to have the ability to discard prehistoric ideas and grow and improve and adapt to change, as business goals may change, colleagues may change, but you have to be able to adapt," he added.

Arvind Mishra, Global Head - Talent & Change, Polaris Software Labs spoke about the importance of teamwork and communication skills. All jobs had a small percentage of creativity but mostly it was mundane and repetitive work; this was how industry was and one cannot expect to have a completely creative job.

Sundar S. Iyer, Director, Oracle Corporation, said, "Focus on what you have an aptitude for and nurture it and you will succeed". Confidence was very important and the way job seekers carried themselves was very important. "You have to appear confident and speak up and let your interviewer know what you know, express yourself and confidently answer the questions with what you know".
