MANGALORE: The South Canara District Central Cooperative (SCDCC) Bank will examine the revival of the Brahmavar Cooperative Sugar Factory and provide relief to the sugarcane growers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, chairman of the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank M.N. Rajendra Kumar said here on Tuesday. He was speaking at a function organised to train the farmers and members of cooperative societies in distribution and application of fertilizers, organised by Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd. Mr. Kumar said the sugarcane growers in both districts would provide 1.5 lakh tonnes of cane in a season. He had appealed to him to take up the revival of the sugar factory at Brahmavar. Mr. Kumar said that the factory needed Rs. 5 crore to get back into the crushing business. According to him, after the fall in prices of arecanut and high overheads for cultivating paddy, the farmers were now in a good mind to cultivate sugarcane in the region. According to him, two lakh tonnes of cane per crop was required to revive the factory.
