Severe shortage of fertilizers in Dakshina Kannada: BJP

Staff Correspondent

Centre blamed for the situation

MANGALORE: There is a severe shortage of fertilizers in Dakshina Kannada district and improper import policy of the Union Government is to be blamed for the situation, the district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged.

The Centre had reduced the subsidy on fertilizers and was forced to spend more on import of this essential product, a press release from Vishveshwar Bhat B., general secretary of the district unit of the party said. Claiming that the Centre was uncertain on import of fertilizers on this account, Mr. Bhat said the farmers were facing problems as a result.

Fertilizers on time

If farmers did not get fertilizers on time during the withdrawal phase of monsoon, it would have an undesirable effect on the crops during the rabi season.

Farmers were forced to buy potash, phosphates and other types of fertilizers from the black market and this was not a good trend, he said. Urging the Centre to effectively intervene to resolve the issue, Mr. Bhat said the party had also apprised the Union Government on the issue through the Minister for Fisheries B. Nagaraj Shetty and the BJP members of Parliament from the region D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Manorama Madhwaraj. He hoped the Centre would take suitable steps in this regard.
