Staff Correspondent

50 principals, senior faculty of colleges to participate in it

MANGALORE: Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Law College and Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Law will host a national seminar on "Rethinking of legal education" here on September 16, principal of the college B. K. Ravindra has said.

Inauguration

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, he said Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would inaugurate the seminar. Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy will be the chief guest. Mr. Ravindra said legal education had undergone considerable change in the era of globalisation. However, over the years the stakeholders of legal education, especially the Bar Council of India, University Grants Commission and the State governments had not realised the institutional needs to change curriculum and infrastructure needs to respond to the new realities of legal education.

Several law colleges had been denied basic facilities and condition of law teachers was deplorable, he said.

Structural change

Law education in the State required an all-round structural change. The seminar would attempt to address all these issues, he said.

Over 50 principals, senior faculty members of law of various colleges and law departments of universities in the country will attend the seminar.

Seminar topics

Some of the topics to be covered in the seminar include "Significance of legal education in the era of globalisation", "Law education and career opportunities", "Legal research" and "Mobilisation of resources and infrastructure changes".

Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University K.M. Kaveriappa will deliver the valedictory address.
