Free bicycles distributed to students from poor families

  • 5,658 beneficiaries have been identified in the district
  • Plan to provide free bicycles to boys to take off next year

    MANGALORE: Girl students from below the poverty line families were provided free bicycles at a function here on Wednesday.

    Cycles were provided to eighth standard students in Mangalore city limits, as part of the Statewide project.

    Nagaraj Shetty, district-in-charge Minister, who inaugurated the function, said that bicycles would be distributed in all taluks of the district within 10 days. A total of 5,658 beneficiaries had been identified in the district, comprising Bantwal, Belathangady, Mangalore city, Mangalore Rural, Moodbidri, Puttur and Sullia.

    Of the 842 cycles to be distributed in Mangalore city, 140 were distributed at the function. The rest will be delivered to houses of students.

    Mr. Shetty said that the beneficiaries had been identified on the basis of the available data. If authorities found that any eligible student had been missed out, the situation would be rectified.

    Bicycles for boys

    He also said the State Government was planning to provide free bicycles to boys from below poverty line families from next year. Yogish Bhat, MLA who presided over the function said that there were several problems with the preparation of the list.

    Once they were rectified, more students would be eligible to get cycles.

    Mamata Gatti, zilla panchayat president; Dhnanjay Kumar, zilla panchayat vice-president, Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner, Gokuldas Shetty, taluk panchayat president; Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president, kannada sahitya parishat and others were present at the function.
