CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Wednesday called upon the business community of India and the U.S. to play a vital role in developing the relations between the two countries.

Launching the southern Indian chapter of the Indian American Business Promotion Council here, he said such efforts were required to supplement India's initiatives to strengthen the economic, trade and investment ties with the U.S.

The launch of the chapter came in the backdrop of the "amazing developments" in the knowledge-based industry in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Its success would open up avenues for many other sectors of the economy.

Mr. Barnala presented the council's best businessperson of the year award to M. Krishnan and M. Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets for their commitment to social responsibility.

At the function organised by the Madras Management Association and the council, they received `US recognition,' for their commitment to quality and excellence in business acumen, from U.S. Consul-General David T. Hopper. They were also presented with the award of excellence (2006) of the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America, by poet Vairamuthu, for "their stellar role in promoting Tamil language, culture, music, fine arts, heritage and spirituality."

Describing the brothers as "wonderful ambassador" of their industry and culture, Mr. Hopper said there was a lot of opportunity for promoting south Indian food in the U.S. Vice-chairman of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (Tamil Nadu branch) Hiren Shah spoke.
