Chennai : Kumararaja M.A.M. Muthiah Chettiar devoted himself wholeheartedly to improving the living conditions of the poor, V. Ratnam, former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, said on Wednesday. Presenting an award of Rs. one lakh to S. Kavitha, founder of the Rajiv Gandhi Home for Handicapped, on behalf of the Kumara Rajah M. A. M. Muthiah Chettiar Memorial Trust, commemorating the stalwart's 78th birthday, he said that Muthiah Chettiar was an epitome of honour and honesty. "He spoke to everyone alike with the same courtesy. Gentleness, clarity of mind and vision, courage, courtesy and respect towards others were his qualities," the judge said. V.V. Subramaniam, Principal, R. K. M. Vivekananda College, paid tributes to the social services rendered by Muthiah Chettiar. Ms. Kavitha thanked the Trust for choosing her organisation to confer the award. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor, Annamalai University and patron of the Trust, welcomed the gathering. M.A.M.R. Muthiah, president of the Trust, who read the citation of the awardee, said that affected by myopathy at the age of 13, Ms. Kavitha was confined to a wheel chair. After getting trained in tailoring and embroidery , she started the home for disabled with just three people and Rs. 5 lakh.
