House surgeons call off strike

KOCHI: House surgeons at the Cooperative Medical College, Kalamassery, who were on strike since Tuesday night, called off their strike following discussions mediated by M.M. Yousuf, MLA, and Kalamassery Circle Inspector Gigimon K.M. The house surgeons went on a 24-hour strike after a group that accompanied an accident victim reportedly manhandled one of them complaining delay in treatment. In a press release issued here, the house surgeons said that instances of bystanders attacking duty doctors at casualty were not new at the medical college. Lack of proper security staff and reluctance to set up a police aid-post at the college had led to this situation, they said. - Staff Reporter

Air Deccan flight makes priority landing

Kochi: A Thiruvananthapuram - Bangalore flight of Air Deccan made a priority landing at Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery at 6.45 p.m. on Wednesday. The plane was forced to seek a priority landing as the wing shield of the aircraft developed some complaints. The flight had 61 passengers on board, bound for Thiruvananthapuram. They were transported by another Air Deccan flight and Jet Airways' flight. - Staff Reporter

Ayyankali birth anniversary celebrated

Kochi: The 144th birth anniversary of social reformer Ayyankali was celebrated by the Dalit Service Society at Panangad on Wednesday.

A procession was taken out from Madavana Junction to Gopinatha Menon Auditorium, Panangad. Poet M.B. Manoj inaugurated the public meeting held later. Scheduled Castes/Tribes members of Kumbalam grama panchayat were felicitated on the occasion. - Staff Reporter

Girl murdered

Kochi: Laya, 21, was murdered and her 13-year-old brother injured at their house in Ambedkar Colony, Kottuvally, near Paravur, on Wednesday. Ramesh, 22, hailing from Kaitharam, was arrested in this connection . Laya was the daughter of Supalakan, a toddy tapper. The accused had made a proposal of marriage to the young woman, to which she was opposed, the police said. - Staff Reporter
