KARAIKUDI: In order to encourage research and publications, Alagappa University has introduced a performance linked incentive scheme to its faculty members.P. Kanniappan, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu that the University Syndicate had approved the schemeaimed at producing extraordinary research scholars. He said that the new scheme was in addition to the existing pay revision system available to the staff members of the university. A committee, which was constituted to define and design the modalities and implementation of the scheme, had come out with benchmarks to assess the performance of faculty members engaged in research and other activities. Dr. Kanniappan said that benchmarks on assessment would be determined on the basis of awards, publication of books, research publication, best paper awards and generation of research grants. Faculty members, who had won international awards given by the United Nations and World Health Organisation would be given 5 credits. Nobel Prize, Bharat Ratna awardees would be granted 20 credits. Those who won awards from the University Grants Commission and national academies would get 3 credits. Those who were presented with State Government awards would get 2 credits. Faculty members who entered into commercial agreements and technology transfers would get 5 credits. The criteria had been formalised for various achievements. S. Mohan, Dean, College Development Council, said that the incentive for each credit would carry a cash amount of Rs.6000. The system was given effect from April 1, 2005. The credit earned in one category would not be taken into account for other categories. Credit would be shared appropriately when there was more than a principal investigator or project coordinator for research projects.
