TIRUCHI: Three children of a family Adaikayee (15), a class X student, Neelamegan (10), a class V student, and Dhanalakshmi (4) were killed in a wall collapse when they were sleeping inside their house at Murungapettai, near here, in the wee hours of Wednesday. The father of the victims, Mookaiyan, a coolie labourer, their mother, Marudambal, and another sister Megambal were sleeping outside the thatched house on Keezha Theru when the incident occurred. According to police, the children were sleeping inside the house when a portion of the wall suddenly collapsed and fell on them around 4 .m. All the three were rushed to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital here. However, Neelamegan and Dhanalakshmi died on the way, while Adaikayee succumbed to her injuries after being admitted to the hospital.
Weak walls
The police said the walls of the house were not strong and the recent rainfall had weakened them. The Jeeyapuram police have registered a case. The Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru and the Forest Minister, N. Selvaraj, accompanied by the District Collector, Ashish Vachhani, and the Deputy Mayor, M. Anbazhagan, went to the hospital in the afternoon and consoled the victims' father. Mr. Nehru handed over a cheque for Rs.15,000 as immediate relief to Mookaiyan from the District Welfare Fund Committee.
New house
He assured that a new house would be constructed free of cost for the family. Earlier, the district administration handed over a sum of Rs.2,000 as Government relief, a dhothi, saree, 10 kg of rice and one litre kerosene to the affected family.
