For a competition to mark `Vegetarian Day' at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College

TIRUCHI: At Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, the fad is raw vegetables and fruits, for a change. The Departments of Microbiology and Fashion Technology conducted a cookery competition, `Fireless Cooking,' to mark `Vegetarian Day' on Wednesday.

Over hundred students from various departments took part in the competition, trying their hands in preparing various `desi' delicacies.

On display were `Godham Panner cashew nut,' `Aval pudding,' coconut milk shake, green-gram salad and an umpteen variety of sandwiches.

"Most of the dishes are basically salads, sweets, puddings, sandwiches and fruit juices," said the head of the Department of Fashion Technology and Costume Designing, J. Mekala.

R. Shirley, a II-year student was trying out a tender-coconut juice and dry fruit salad. "The nutritive benefits are aplenty in this salad," the anxious participant was explaining the recipe to the judges. To her right was a student of Physics, who was trimming the ends of spring onions that were crushed in between a couple of cheese buns "It's a cucumber-bean vegetable sandwich. The spring onions and fresh beans are the new additions I have tried out," she grinned.

"The judgement is mainly based on the taste and the creativity involved and a to some extent the nutritive benefits," she added.
