`Crime prevention measures stepped up'

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Crime prevention measures are given greater impetus in crime-prone pockets, said the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, A.T. Duraikumar on Tuesday.

Mr. Duraikumar told reporters that two-wheeler patrolling was introduced on a trial basis in Vadavalli and Thudialur round the clock. Policemen with walkie-talkie sets were assigned areas for patrolling to ensure visible policing and deter criminal elements from operating freely. This had reduced the number of crime incidents, the SP said. The presence of policemen and frequent interaction with the public would help sensing trouble, he added.

Tirupur sub-division, which was growing financially, industrially as well as in terms of population, had become a challenge for the law-enforcing machinery. The hosiery unit owners were being sensitised to the need for verifying antecedents of workers before recruiting them. They were asked to get the thumb impression, permanent address and photographs of the workers, Mr. Duraikumar said.

As a precautionary measure, checkposts had been erected on seven arterial roads that connected the hosiery town with the rest of the district.

Utilising the existing resources of the district police, four vehicles were being deployed for round-the-clock patrolling. Two-wheeler patrolling would also be introduced in Tirupur soon, he added.

The presence of police was also being ensured in areas that have banks especially on Saturdays when hosiery units drew large amounts of cash for paying wages.

Commercial hubs were also being brought under the surveillance of the police. An awareness programme had been planned to educate the workforce and hosiery unit owners on precautions to be taken during festival seasons.
