COIMBATORE: Cotton prices have come down marginally during the last two or three days, according to trade sources here. On an average, the prices went up by Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 a candy during the last three months. One of the reasons was apprehension of a delay in cotton crop in the next season due to rain in some States.
Better picture
However, now there is better picture of the crop size for the ensuing season and also it is clear that there will be no abnormal delay in the arrivals. Hence, "the rising tendency (of cotton price) has been arrested." And, on an average, the prices have come down by about Rs. 200- Rs. 300 a candy.
Spinners hit
The South India Small Spinners' Association president K.R. Selva Kumar said the price increase had affected the small-scale spinners. These units usually had a maximum of a month's stock of the raw material. "It will be difficult for these units to have six months to one year stock." Since this was end of the 2005-2006 season, the prices were expected to come down. He said that though cotton production was estimated to go up this year, prices were also expected to be higher due to increase in consumption.
