Coimbatore: The council meeting of the Coimbatore Corporation held on Wednesday was adjourned sine die. Within 15 minutes of commencement, councillors of all political parties protested against a resolution relating to giving contracts to private parties for statue maintenance not being tabled. The meeting was presided over by Mayor (in-charge) K. Raghupathy. Commissioner P. Muthuveeran was also present.
Statue maintenance
On August 31, when the issue came up for discussion, the DMK councillor P.S. Selvaraj wanted the Corporation to reply on the issue of giving a contract to maintain the statue of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, installed at Gandhipuram. The councillors urged the Corporation to take a policy decision on the maintenance of statues . They wanted the administration to table a resolution before the council on this issue. The meeting was adjourned to September 6. Only 24 resolutions were discussed by the council and the remaining were also adjourned for Wednesday. When the meeting began this morning, the councillors on seeing the agenda asked why the particular resolution was not tabled.
Objection
They objected to the tabling of nearly ten resolutions on change of land use patterns based on applications from promoters of flats and residential properties.
Priority
They accused the Corporation officials of giving priority to commercial interests. The Communist members urged the Corporation not to relegate issues concerning the people to the backburner. The members staged a walkout and squatted in front of the council hall. After adjourning the meeting sine die, Mr. Raghupathy had a word with the agitated councillors.
