Bangalore: Work on the flyover near Banaswadi Main Road was stopped on Wednesday, following a protest by residents of Lingarajapuram.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and the Railways, in a joint venture, were building the flyover to connect Maruthi Sevanagar and Banaswadi Main Road. Another flyover to connect Kammanahalli and Byappanahalli is being built at the same place.

This flyover is only about 21 feet and obstructed easy flow of pedestrians and vehicles, said P. Muralidhar, president of the Lingarajapuram Ward Number 87 Melesetuve, Nagarikara Horata Samiti and Kannada Sangha Sansthegala Parivara. Joint Commissioner (East) of BMP Nagaraj said that other problems raised by the residents included lack of walking space.

Residents complained that they would have to travel about 1.5 km to reach Banaswadi main road, said Mr. Muralidhar. R. Jayaprasad, technical advisor to BMP, said the flyover was 7.5 metres wide as per Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards. It could not be widened, as that would entail acquiring land in the surrounding areas, he said. The residents' suggestions would be taken into consideration and a meeting would be convened on the issue, he said.
