Bangalore: The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) on Wednesday demolished over 50 houses in Amarjyothinagar ward and recovered about 9 acres of land. The value of the recovered property was estimated to be Rs. 73 crore. The demolition, which began at 5.30 a.m., was carried out without any prior notice to residents. "They were illegal encroachments and therefore we did not have to inform them, said Venugopal Rao, Executive Engineer, West Division. Initially, the residents protested against the demolitions but later gave in, he said. The residents were given about half an hour to collect their belongings following which the demolitions continued, said Mr. Rao. A press release from the BDA said encroachments on Survey Number 36, 37 and 53 of Malagala village, Nagarabhavi Layout were cleared. About 40 sheds and 10 compounds had sprung up on BDA property. Fencing of the property recovered was in progress. Mr. Rao said more than 350 policemen stood guard, as the area of demolition was vast. The demolition operation was carried out in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (West division) K.V. Sharath Chandra and the BDA task force, the release added.
