Environmental activists have been crying hoarse over an unsavoury trade taking place during every Onam in Kozhikode city. The festival of joy and plenty is a dreaded experience for scores of parrots sold as pets during the season, in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, pandering to a fancy of a section of city dwellers. Activists of the Conservation of Nature Society say that sale of parrots is an offence under the Act, punishable with fine and imprisonment. Traders from Tamil Nadu who camp in the city during the festival sell the parrots in small cages. The birds reportedly die in a couple of days, unable to survive the inhuman conditions.
