DOWN MEMORY LANE: Vinitha and K.P. Udayabhanu at the `Old is Gold' music show in Kozhikode on Wednesday evening.
The moon was full on Wednesday night. There could not have been a more romantic time to listen to one of the most romantic songs ever in Malayalam: "Kananachayayil aadu meykkan... " When K.P. Udayabhanu and Vinitha sang that lovely piece of poetry by Changampuzha, which was set to tune by K. Raghavan for the film version of `Ramanan' in 1967, the huge crowd at the Government Model HSS Ground relished every moment of it. The `Old is Gold' music programme by Udayabhanu was indeed one of the best shows at the District Tourism Promotion Council's Onam celebrations in Kozhikode, which concluded on Thursday. The veteran playback singer was well supported by a talented bunch of singers, young and not so young. They sang two dozen songs, which reminded the audience how rich and soulful Malayalam music tradition was in films and theatre not so long ago. Udayabhanu, who had sung some of the best songs during that golden age of Malayalam film music, proved yet again that age had not harmed his voice. His rendition of "Vellinakshathrame... " (`Ramanan') and "Anuraga natakathil... " (`Ninamaninja Kalpadukal'), two of his most popular numbers, were amazing. One of the show's highlights was Vinitha's ""Aadanumariyam... ," one of the few `mujra's in Malayalam cinema.
