Rupee loses eight paise

MUMBAI: In highly volatile trading, the rupee on Thursday closed weak against the U.S. currency on the interbank foreign exchange market due to fresh dollar demand.

Against the U.S. currency, the rupee opened weak at 46.16/18 a dollar against last close of 46.11/12, but later recovered steeply to hit an intra-day high of 46.01 on heavy dollar sales, forex dealers said.

However, the firm trend was short-lived as fresh demand for dollar pulled down the Indian currency to a low of 46.23 before closing at 46.19/20.
