AFTER THE HARVEST: A cattle race in full swing at Chithali near Palakkad. It was conducted as part of Onam. Animals used in such races are fostered and fed on a special diet and regime and are valued more than the ordinary ones. The Cattle Race Club of Kerala, with branches in neighbouring States too, usually oversees the race. However, owing to a stay in force in several parts of the State following objection by animal lovers and their organisations, the competition was organised without tortur ing the animals. Photo: K.K.
