BELGAUM: District Sessions Judge Arun Chaudapurkar, who headed the team of judges that visited some flood-affected areas in Chikkodi, Athani, Raibag and Gokak taluks last month, said the compensation being provided to the victims of floods was inadequate. Talking to presspersons here on Thursday, he agreed that the guidelines on distribution of compensation to the victims of such natural calamities under the Union Government's Calamity Relief Fund were not based on scientific assessment of loss to property. Farmers were complaining that the ceiling of Rs. 10,000 for crop loss was not fair, he said. But the major and common demand from the families and farmers in the low-lying areas on the banks of the Krishna and the Ghataprabha was to have a permanent solution. He said a preliminary report had been sent to the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, which had requested the team to explore the possibilities of lending legal aid to the victims of natural calamities. A detailed report would be sent soon and subsequently, the authority would recommend measures for a permanent solution, he added.
