This Day That Age
The five-nation Menzies mission, in Cairo to approach Egypt for negotiations on the Suez dispute, has reached a stalemate in its talks with President Nasser. Diplomatic sources said on September 6 that no headway had been made in four meetings over the past three days between the team headed by Mr. R.G. Menzies, the Australian Prime Minister, and the Egyptian leader. Mr.Menzies and his colleagues from the US, Sweden, Iran and Ethiopia submitted and explained in great length the 18-nation proposals to Mr. Nasser, who in turn limited himself to explaining the Egyptian Government's stand. Egypt has consistently refused to accept internationalisation of the 101-mile Suez Canal. She says international control would infringe her sovereign rights.
