dated September 8, 1956: Constitution Bill passed

The Lok Sabha on September 6 passed the Constitution (Ninth Amendment) Bill, relating to the States' reorganisation, by 312 votes to nil after nearly ten hours' sitting. The Home Minister, Pandit Pant, expressed the hope that the scheme that would be launched on November 1 would receive the cooperation of all sections of the community and all political parties. The country, he said, should now concentrate on the Five-Year Plan, and make up for the time "wasted in bickerings, friction and a virtual tug of war." He thanked the House for the excellent contribution to the debate and also expressed appreciation of the excellent work done by the Secretariat staff of the Home Ministry and in particular Mr. Hari Sharma, Special Officer in charge of SRC, and Mr. K.V.K. Sundaram of the Ministry of Law.
