PONDICHERRY: The French Institute here has developed a software with applications to control weeds. "The software allows identifying the rice and weed species of the Indo-Gangetic plains in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan through an attractive graphical interface. It has been developed to improve the practice of monitoring weeds," said Jean-Pierre Muller, Director of the institute. The software, Open Source Simple Computer for Agriculture in Rural Areas, was co-financed by the European Commission's Asia IT&C Programme. The Education Minister, M.O.H.F Shajahan, launched the software on Thursday at a function in the institute. The software is now available in MS Windows, Linux, PDA (Simputer) and web-based versions. Balasubramaniam, systems- in -charge of the institute, said the utility of the software was tremendous especially for the academicians and farmers. It could also be deployed by grassroots' level organisations involved in information and communication technology initiatives for agriculture in rural areas, he noted. Around 53 different weed species had been incorporated in the software, he added. For more information on OSCAR logon on to: http://www.ifpindia.org
