When pachyderms created panic

A handful of Public Works Department staff and Kerala State police personnel are in a state of fear at the Periyar dam.

Snakes in the forest area terrorise them, driving them to seek asylum at the inspection bungalow from their quarters. Of late, elephants are driving them mad and giving them sleepless nights. Though the staff have dug trenches around their quarters, inspection bungalow and erected fences, the elephants manage to enter the living area.

Now, they have set up an indigenous alarm to watch the movement of elephants during nights.

They have laid thin metal wires around the inspection bungalow tied to drums. Whenever the elephants disturb the wire while crossing it, the drums will fall down creating loud noise and wake up the staff.
