Sharmila keeps lead

BANGALORE: Sharmila Nicollet held on to the lead for the third day in succession with a card of two-over 74 for the penultimate day.

The 15-year-old KGA youngster played an excellent first nine holes with two birdies and the rest pars to be two under. However her back nine was marred with a hat-trick of bogeys (14th, 15th and 16th) and another dropped shot on the final hole to spoil her card. Sharmila also had a birdie on the 11th to retain her seven-stroke lead over Vaishavi Sinha.

Shruti Khanna dropped to fourth position after submitting a poor card of six-over 78 for the day. Meghana Bal moved into third spot in the gold division.

In the Silver division, Dhanalakshmi Rice had a three-stroke lead over Megha Verma of Lucknow Golf Club. Renuka Phillip lost a couple of places to be in fourth position.

In the bronze division Priya Khanna established a strong lead of 12 strokes over Gomathi Rajaram.

IOC thrashes PCTC

Indian Oil Corporation Limited scored five goals past Pioneer Corps Training Centre to continue its sizzling campaign in the Deccan Herald Super Division league hockey tournament.

Skipper Deepak Thakur (21st & 32nd) opened the scoring, while Didar Singh (38th), Roshan Minz (46th) and Hamza Mujtaba (54th) were the other scorers. IOCL had trounced MLI 11-0 in its first match.

In other encounters, Madras Engineering Group defeated Central Excise 3-1, while Karnataka State Police blanked Canara Bank 2-0.

Big win for VVS SPHS

K.V. Siddharth's 123 and Manish's five-wicket haul helped VVS Sardar Patel HS defeat Vijaya HS by 138 runs in a Parle Cup under-17 tournament match here on Thursday.

The scores: VVS SPHS 264 for nine in 45 overs (K.V. Siddharth 123) bt Vijaya HS 126 in 30.4 overs (Prajwal 48, S. Manish five for 41); BET Convent 92 in 27.3 overs lost to Presidency School, Nandini Layout 95 for one in 15.2 overs; BGS International Res. School 353 for nine in 45 overs (K. Nitin 85, Adil 85, Kunal 44 n.o.) bt Chinmay Vidyalaya 107 in 20.1 overs (Sourabh four for 26); KV, Hebbal 235 in 43 overs (Liyan Khan 55, Neelesh four for 41) bt Stracy Memorial HS 206 in 40.1 overs (Suraj six for 29).

School athletic meet

The Department of Public Instruction and Mysore division's Physical Education Department will organise the district-level Higher Primary and High School level athletic meet at the Chamundivihar Stadium in Mysore on Sept. 8 (HPS) and 9 (HS) respectively. This meet will be the basis for selecting the district team for the State-level meet.
