Natyarangam honours dance guru M.K. Saroja

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Natyarangam, the dance wing of the Narada Gana Sabha Trust, honoured dance guru M.K. Saroja on the occasion of its 10th annual bharatanatyam festival that began here on Wednesday.

Presenting a citation and Rs.5,000 in cash to Ms. Saroja, Music Academy president N. Murali said the Academy would conduct an annual dance festival along with its annual music festival from this year onwards. Congratulating Natyarangam for organising thematic dance festivals for the last nine years, Mr. Murali suggested that music sabhas in the city collaborate with each other. They should not compete but complement each other, as there was enough space for all sabhas, he added.

P.R. Kalyanaraman, General Manager, Southern Zones, Bank of India, who was the chief guest, said public sector banks should not confine themselves to their normal activities but should participate in relationship banking, such as cultural festivals in their neighbourhood.

Narada Gana Sabha secretary R. Krishnaswami said Natyarangam was launched in 1995 with a two-fold purpose of providing a platform for talented young dancers and for creating awareness on various aspects of dance appreciation.

Sabha president R. Krishnamoorthy said a five-day dance festival is organised every year focusing on specific themes. This year's festival was on saint poets.

The Sudharani Raghupathy Award was presented to mridanga vidwan N.V. Balakrishnan, the Obul Reddy Award to senior dancer Sheejith Krishna and the Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari Award for talent promotion to Nrithya Jagannathan.

The awards carried a gold medal and a certificate of merit.
