Bibu rewrites record

Hyderabad: Bibu Mathew of Navy set a new meet record in the triple jump with an effort of 16.31m in the 56th Services athletics championship at the GMC Balayogi Stadium here on Thursday.

The results:

200m: 1. K.K. Biju (Navy) 21.73s, 2. B. Ramu (ArmyGreen), 3. T.G. Ajesh (Navy).

Triple jump: 1. Bibu Mathew (Navy) 16.31m (NMR), 2. Alex Thomas (Army Green), 3. Prateesh Joseph (Army Red).

Shot put: 1. Jaibir Singh (Army Red) 17.69m, 2. P.B. Giri (Army Green), 3. Santosh Kumar (Army Red).

5,000m: 1. J. Lakade (Army Green) 14:43.07, 2. Sita Ram (Army Red), 3. P.M. Shanawas (Army Red).

20-km: 1. P.S. Jalan (Army Red) 1:33.23, 2. Gurdev Singh (Army Green), 3. Mahender Singh (Army Red).

1,500m: 1. C. Hamza (Army Red) 3:49.74, 2. Sandeep Kumar (Army Green), 3. Amol Kumar (Army Green).

400m hurdles: 1. Kunwar Rakesh (Army Green) 52.66, 2. B. Nimesh (Navy), 3. Jitender Singh (Army Red).

Hammer throw: 1. Nirbhay Singh (Navy) 66.52m, 2. Imran Ahmed (Army Green), 3. Yogesh Singh (Army Red).

High jump: 1. Alex Thomas (Army Green) 2.08m, 2. Lorans (Navy), 3. S. Sreenath (Navy).

Thumping win for Royal

Royal Club drubbed Coronation 9-0 in the A-2 Division hockey league championship at the Begumpet Police Stadium here. Royal struck five times in the first session, Sandeep and Farooq Hussain scoring a brace and Sunny scoring off a solo effort.

In the second half, Sandeep and Srikanth were on target once each and Balbir Singh scored twice to complete the tally.

Jitender top seeded

G. Jitender Kumar and M. Revathi were given the top billing in the St. Paul's Table Tennis Academy's annual State-ranking tournament, which gets underway here on September 8. A record number of 795 entries have been received and 34 schools will figure in the inter-school competitions, Md. Ibrahim Khan and P. Nagender Reddy, coordinators of the academy, said while addressing the media on Thursday.

The event is being sponsored by K.S. Raymond (Malakpet) and co-sponsored by SBI.

Guzzlers made to struggle

Guzzlers recorded a two-wicket win over Air Tel in the Monsoon Cup Corporate cricket tournament here.

The scores:

Spoorthi 191 for two (Hemanth 73 not out, Kishore Jr 42 not out, Sudhakar 40) bt Cistron CC 174 for seven (Kiran 70).

Pharma Blues 167 for eight bt Adarsh XI 73 (Basheer four for nine).

Capco 147 for six (Kishore 69) bt Melgiri 104.

Air Tel 116 (K. Rajesh five for 24) lost to Guzzlers 117 for eight.

Chess trials

The Andhra Pradesh Chess Association will organise selection trials on September 9 and 10 at the Brilliant Grammar School to pick the State teams for the National women's `B' chess championship to be held in Chennai from September 19 to 26. Entries close on Sept. 8.

District athletics

The Ranga Reddy District Amateur Athletics Association will organise the annual district meet for boys and girls (u-14 and 16) at the RRC Grounds on Sept. 11.
