KOZHIKODE: Sage and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru was remembered on the occasion of his 152nd birth anniversary here on Thursday with the conduct of special pujas, mass feeding, processions and meetings. At the Sreekanteswara Temple, the religious rituals commenced with the performance of `mahaganapathivahanam' followed by a mass prayer in which hundreds of people participated besides the `Guruvandanam-Gurupuja' ritual. The SNDP Yogam Kozhikode North and South units, the Sreekanteswara Kshetra Yogam, the Sree Narayana Educational Society, and the Gurudharmapracharana Sabha were involved in the observance of the Guru Jayanthi in the city. An organising committee representing the various organisations had been set up to oversee the celebration arrangements. The various processions comprising children from the suburban centres congregated at the Sreekanteswara temple premises in the morning. Sreekanteswaram Kshetra Yogam president P.V. Chandran delivered the benedictory address at the children's meeting held on the occasion. Convener, Chadayam celebrations organising committee, I.P. Pushparaj among others offered felicitations.
Prizes distributed
Prizes were distributed to winners in the different contests conducted in connection with the Guru Jayanthi. Clothes were distributed to 152 students from the economically weaker sections. Mass feeding, payasam distribution and `Chadayam' day conference were held at the temple premises. A colourful procession was taken out from the premises of the S.N. Education Society near the Fourth Gate. The Gurudeva Ratham lead the procession that was accompanied by `panchavadyam', `chendamelam', `shingarimelam', `kavadiyattom', `karagayattom', `kolkali', colourful parasols besides floats depicting different scenes. The procession went via the Fourth Gate, YMCA Cross Road, Kurisupalli Junction, Bank Road, S. M. Street, Melepalayam, and G. H. Road and congregated at the specially arranged venue at Muthalakulam.
Public meeting
Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the public meeting organised on the occasion in which hundreds of people participated. Sree Narayana Jayanthi celebrations organising committee chairman, P. V. Chandran lit the traditional lamp. Vidya Prakash presided. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, P.V. Gangadharan, among others offered felicitations at the meeting.
