New drug to treat kala-azar

Special Correspondent

PATNA: The Institute for One World Health on Thursday claimed that it had developed a drug for treatment of kala-azar (black fever), which is mostly prevalent in Bihar.

The senior programme officer of Institute Philippe Desjeux told reporters that its clinical test in the State was successful with a 94 per cent cure rate.

About 667 people were treated with the drug, Paromomycin, under the supervision of three doctors from the Indian Council of Medical Research. They vouched for the efficacy of the drug.

Gland Pharma Limited, Hyderabad, has sought the Government of India's permission to produce the drug, to be administered through an intra-muscular injection, and if all goes well it would hit the market in early 2007.

It was claimed that the infection borne by the sand fly could be treated in less than three weeks at an estimated cost of Rs. 450 to Rs. 700 for the entire course. It is much lower than the prevailing costly drugs.
