Nod for autonomy to JIPMER

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for converting the Pondicherry-based Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) into an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament.

This will help to bring it on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at New Delhi, and the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh.

Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, an official spokesman said as an attached and subordinate office of the Directorate General of Health Services, JIPMER now lacked financial powers. Therefore, for every major work - be it construction or expansion of hospital buildings or residential quarters, renovation of wards, creation and filling up of Group `A' and `B' posts, prior sanction and approval of the Directorate was required.

The Cabinet's decision would enable JIPMER to have its own policy for selection and recruitment. It would, thereafter, create its own standards of medical education and research as was being done by AIIMS and PGIMER. An Act of Parliament would enable JIPMER to get the status of a university. It will give more freedom and benefits to the institution.
