DAVANGERE: The State Government is contemplating reducing the number of gram panchayats in the State as a large amount of money is being spent on administration than on development, C.M. Udasi, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister. Speaking to presspersons in Chitradurga on Thursday, Mr. Udasi said there were over 5,400 gram panchayats in the State and funds released to gram panchayats had been utilised for administration.

He said the Government wanted funds to be used for development of villages. The Government was thinking of merging two or three gram panchayats. Most of the present gram panchayat secretaries had expertise in management of gram panchayats . The Minister said Rs. 4,319 crore had been released as grant by the Rural Development Ministry and 49 per cent of the amount had gone directly to the gram panchayats. Siddeshwar, Davangere MP; B.T. Chennabasappa, MLC; and Chief Executive Officer of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat Narayanaswamy were present.
