BANGALORE: There will be no "Janata Darshan" of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday as it will be a second Saturday and is a general holiday, says a press release from the Chief Minister's secretariat.

The "Janata Darshan" was not held last Saturday also.

Man dies as train

rams tractor-trailer

Davangere: One person was killed and another seriously injured when the sand laden-tractor-trailer by which they were travelling was hit by the Shatabdi Express at an unmanned level crossing near Karur cross in Davangere district on Thursday.

The Railway police said the train was on its way to Bangalore from Hubli when the accident occurred.

The deceased was identified as Lingajja (45).

The injured was admitted to a hospital here. — UNI

Arrival timings of

trains revised

BANGALORE: The arrival of the following trains in Bangalore city have been revised with effect from Friday: the 2785 Kacheguda-Bangalore Express will arrive at 6.50 a.m. instead of 6.25 a.m.; the 6731 Tuticorin-Mysore Express will arrive at 6.25 a.m. instead of 6.35 a.m.; the 6525 Kanyakumari-Bangalore Express will arrive at 7 a.m. instead of 6.55 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Minister opposes Upper Bhadra project

TUMKUR: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has again expressed his opposition to the Upper Bhadra project.

Talking to presspersons at Pavagada in Tumkur district on Thursday, Mr. Shankaramurthy said the Lakkavalli Dam had filled to its capacity only five times since it was built. Hence, he said, it was highly impossible to even assume giving water to the Upper Bhadra project.

Haryana wants to adopt HOPCOMS model

BANGALORE: An official delegation from Haryana, led by the State's Agriculture Minister H.S. Chatha, is impressed with the marketing system of the Horticulture Produce Cooperative Marketing Societies (HOPCOMS) in the State and wants to adopt the same model in its State.

The delegation visited the State to study the marketing system for horticulture produce and other farm products.

It met Minister for Agriculture Bandeppa Kashempur and Horticulture Department officials and exchanged ideas.

BANGALORE: Leelavathi M. Modi, wife of renowned eye surgeon the late M.C. Modi passed away on Wednesday in Dharwad. She was 80.

Mysore zoo to hold competitions

MYSORE: As part of its educational activities for 2006, the Mysore zoo will organise drawing and painting, and quiz competitions. According to a statement from the Executive Director of the zoo, a drawing and painting competition for students studying in LKG to degree classes will be held at 10 a.m. on September 24. The quiz competition, which is open to high school students, will be held on November 7 at 10 a.m. For further details, call 2520305 and 2440752.

Medal for city professor

MYSORE: The Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, has selected K.S. Rangappa, professor of chemistry, the University of Mysore, for its bronze medal in recognition of his contribution to research in chemistry. The medal will be presented to Prof. Rangappa at the annual meeting of the society at the University of Delhi, Delhi, to be held from February 2 to 4, according to a press release issued here on Thursday.

Short-term computer courses

MYSORE: The University Computer Centre will offer short-term computer courses. According to a statement, courses will be offered in E-Craft (Fundamentals, MS Office, XP, Internet and Nudi), C Programming and Desk Top Programming (DTP). While E-craft will be a six-week course, C programming will be a four-week course. The DTP course will be offered for eight weeks. The courses will commence on September 11. Dharna called off

BHADRAVATI: The dharna by anganwadi workers association since Monday last urging that locals be given priority in recruitment of assistants was called off following assurances given by officials that locals will be called for interviews at Bullapura Centre. The protestors staged the dharna while the interviews were going on at various centres. The local MLA B.K. Sangameshwar, municipal councillor B.K. Mohan visited the venue of the protest and met the agitators. The protest was led by the association's president Shahida and secretary Jnaneshwari.

Group clash

BHADRAVATI: A group clash was reported on Tuesday at a Rasamanjari programme at a Ganesh pandal at Arabilichi camp in Bhadravati taluk on Tuesday. Govinda of Kudligere village and his accomplices, Ravi and Kalinga, were reportedly assaulted by a rival group. A case has been registered by the Rural Police. Investigation is on.

Threat to vendors

BHADRAVATI: Arrack vendors on Wednesday complained of a threat by a forum against selling arrack. Activists of the forum have reportedly asked the vendors to close their shops and stop selling arrack. The vendors said that they have obtained licence to sell arrack. A vendor, N. Ramesh, alleged that the forum leaders, Balu and Manjappa Gowda, entered his shop and insisted that he close down the shop. — Correspondent

Killed in accident

SHIMOGA: A pedestrian died instantaneously when a private bus knocked him down at the Ameer Ahmed Circle here on Thursday. The accident took place when the pedestrian was crossing the road. The 30-year-old victim could not be identified immediately. — Special Correspondent

Vande Mataram in Sirsi, Siddapur

Sirsi: Students in many schools, colleges, public organisations sang Vande Mataram to mark the centenary celebrations of the national song in Sirsi, Siddapur and Yellapur taluks on Thursday. Many took part in the singing at the scheduled time of 11 a.m. Students in four Urdu schools in Sirsi town sang the song voluntarily, according to sources in the Block Education Office. In Government and public offices too, the staff sang the song voluntarily.

Power shutdown in Hubli

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging the underground power cable network, the following areas in Hubli will not have power supply from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release. They are Madhura Park, Shakti Colony, Nrupatunga Hills, JK School and surrounding areas.

Jewellery, cash taken away

HUBLI: Burglars made off with jewellery estimated at Rs. 24,000 and Rs. 625 in cash from the residence of Sunil Neelkanthsa Habib of Hanumasagar Chawl of Hubli on Wednesday. Kamaripet Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Vedike activists take out procession

RAICHUR: The members of the district unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike took out a procession here on Thursday urging the Union Government to consider the Mahajan Report as a final verdict in settling the Karnataka-Maharastra border dispute and demanded the resignation of the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for his "indifference" to the issue. About 100 activists led by K. Narayana, president of the district unit of the vedike, went in a procession from the Karnataka Sangha and reached the Deputy Commissioner's office. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the Prime Minister to protect the interest of the Kannadigas by considering the recommendations of the report. — Staff Correspondent

Students to observe World Literacy Day

BIDAR: Students of the Government High School and Government Urdu School in Mannaekhalli in Humnabad taluk will observe World Literacy Day by distributing saplings to literates on Friday. The Forest Department, the government high school and the NGO Parisara Vahini are jointly organising the programme in which 5,000 school children and 500 literates are expected to participate.
