Corrections and clarifications

The strapline in the report: "VRS not a right: Supreme Court" (September 7, 2006) was "Employer must accept applications received". A reader points out that the text said the opposite ("... and it is not mandatory for the employer to accept all applications received under the scheme") and that it should have been "Employer can reject applications received".

Referring to another report in the same issue with the heading "Prior sanction must for prosecution of public servants: court", another reader says that it gives the impression that the court has given such a verdict. The story reveals that the heading reflects the arguments of the appellants.

The first sentence "The death of an Ujjain college professor ... " in the editorial "Murder most vile" (September 1, 2006) has a reader protesting over the use of "an" for an "Indian proper noun which is pronounced as `Wojjain' (`wo' as in woman, wood)." He says "a" would have been appropriate. In this part of the country, the place name is generally pronounced as Oojjain, even by those knowing Sanskrit.

In the Agencies report "Davydenko ends Murray's hopes" ("Sport", September 7, 2006), Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) was stated to be a 21-year-old, and later a 19-year-old. The Sports Desk clarifies that she is 21. The error occurred when the two Agency stories were linked. In the same report, and in the results column, a few readers say that the seeding of both Nikolay Davydenko (Russia) and Andrew Murray (Great Britain) was listed as 7. It was an editing error. Davydenko is seeded seventh while Murray is seeded 17.

The sentence in "Bangalore-Mettupalayam rail line plan to go before panel" (September 3, 2006) was: "It [the track] would pass through Samraj Nagar, Balavady, Bannary, Sathyamangalam and Mettupalayam, covering a distance of 318 km." A reader from Erode says that "Samraj nagar" is Chamarajnagar, "Balavady" is "Thalawady" and "Bannary" is "Bannari".
