Stone laid for new entrance to Thrissur railway station

Development schemes for Rs.3.3 crore planned


  • Construction of a third overbridge on the anvil
  • Schemes for Rs.1.9 crore under implementation

    Thrissur: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Thursday laid the foundation for an additional entrance to the Thrissur railway station and commissioned coach guidance and video surveillance systems.

    Addressing the function, the Minister said that development schemes for Rs.3.3 crore were being planned for the railway station.

    "Construction of a third overbridge and improvement of the facilities in waiting halls were on the anvil. Schemes for Rs.1.9 crore were currently being implemented. A sum of Rs.3 crore was spent for the development of the Thrissur railway station in the past five years. Platforms two and three were raised and an air-conditioned dormitory constructed. A big plasma screen for display of information was installed. The station handled 51 train services and served about 12,000 passengers daily. It annual earnings was Rs.29 crore (passenger) and Rs.3 crore (freight)," Mr. Velu said.

    The new entrance is being constructed on the western side of the station. The Rs.14-lakh computer-controlled coach guidance system gives passengers information on the position of coaches. The video surveillance system is set up at a cost of Rs.5 lakh.

    "This system can be viewed through the Internet. I can view the functioning of the Thrissur station and the work of railway officials on the computer in my office," he said.

    Law Minister M. Vijayakumar presided. C.K. Chandrappan, MP, Mayor R. Bindu, Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, spoke.
