New Delhi
It is billed as Asia's largest smart cards exposition. And the ongoing "SmartCards Expo 2006" -- the eighth international conference and exposition of smart card technology and applications -- is being attended by over 224 exhibitors from across the country and abroad. The three-day exhibition that opened at Delhi's Pragati Maidan on Wednesday is witnessing over 50 per cent overseas participation and includes countries like the United States, Britain, China, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, South Africa and Thailand. The exhibition is being held alongside RFID India Expo 2006, e-Security Expo 2006 and India Mobile Forum 2006 at the sprawling exhibition ground. Concurrently with the exhibition, a series of international conferences on "Emerging Technologies in Mobile Communications", "New Vistas in e-Payments" and "Trends in RFID Technology and Applications" is also being held. Leading experts from across the world are participating in these conferences. At present the smart card base in the country is projected to cross 400 million in a few years. Obviously the Indian smart card market has great business potential. The e-security market has become a leading growth industry as global Internet usage and online access has increased. The global market for e-security products has grown at a fast pace, rising from 7.3 billion dollars in 2001 to reach almost 19 billion dollars in 2005. Many global players like IBM, Texas Instruments, MasterCard and Tata Consultancy Services Limited are also taking part in the expo. -- Madhur Tankha
