JAIPUR: Speakers at a workshop on "Women's health needs initiative: Focusing on post-partum care'' here on Thursday called for taking safety measures for women after delivery of children to avoid complications which often result in maternal deaths. The workshop was organised by the Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) and attended by doctors, representatives of public health groups, academicians and Government officials. The participants pointed out that mass awareness was needed to reduce the present figure of 540 deaths per 1-lakh live births. N. Ravichandran, Associate Professor at IIHRM, said focus on post-delivery care was missing and there was a sheer lack of coordination in the extension of post-partum services. Dr. Ravichandran said the neglected attention towards mother and a heavy focus on child due to cultural beliefs had led to high figures of maternal deaths in the country.
