Teachers felicitated

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Twelve teachers from Orissa, who were presented the National Awards by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Teachers' Day, were felicitated at a function in Karnataka Bhavanhere. The teachers were asked to share their experiences in teaching and motivating students in some of the most remote and backward regions of the State.

Dhaneswar Amat, who teaches in the tribal dominated districts of Baud and Kandhamala, said his zeal for recognition and satisfaction drove him to teach the poor tribal children in his State. Despite numerous difficulties, Mr. Amat has been teaching in two of the most underdeveloped regions of the country.

Pandit Karunakar Mishra teaches in the open-air Basanti Sanskrit Vidyalaya in the Kendrapara region. The school, he said, was open to wayward students who were not amenable to discipline and good conduct. Mr. Mishra turned emotional while recalling the case of a ten-year-old boy who had picked up the habit of consuming liquor. Through Gandhian method, Mr. Mishra finally succeeded in making the boy give up liquor.
