Woman flees before raid

Gorakhpur: A Punjab police team, who raided a reputed city hotel in search of a Canadian woman of Indian origin accused of bigamy and cheating, left empty handed after finding she had fled.

Police had come here yesterday in search of Pawinder Chahal, wanted in connection with conning a Scorpio Jeep from Kuldeep Singh of Ludhiana with whom she is said to have a contract marriage despite being the wife of Vijay Swaroop of Gopalganj (Bihar). Police said the woman had escaped with the vehicle to Gorakhpur and had been staying at the hotel. She was found to have fled the hotel without paying Rs 80,000 in bills. The hotel staff refused to hand over the vehicle to police till the arrears were settled.
