Farmers going in for high-yielding rabi varieties

As suggested by Punjab agricultural varsity

Gurdaspur: Acting on the advise of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), the farmers are going in for purchase of improved and high yielding seed varieties of Rabi crops.

This trend was noticed at the Kisan Mela organised at the PAU Regional Station here. The mela was organised by the Directorate of Extension Education of the university. The theme of the mela was `Save Water, Save Punjab'.

The wheat varieties purchased were PBW-343 and PBW-502 of wheat, PBG-5 and PBG-1 of gram, LL-699 of lentil apart from fruits and vegetables.

Inaugurating the Kisan Mela, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that the Government had decided to encourage the cooperative societies for purchasing agricultural machinery by providing the financial assistance.

The costly machinery purchased by the cooperatives can be used by the farmers collectively, he opined.

The Director of Extension Education, PAU, Dr S.S. Gill described paddy as the major culprit for impairment of ecology especially depletion of water table in the State.

He suggested a change in the cropping pattern by adopting vegetables and fruit cultivation in crop rotation in addition to pulses, maize, soybean and other remunerative crops.

Dr Gill also emphasised on value addition of agricultural produce to compete in the world market.

Director of Research Dr B.S. Dhillon advised the farmers to go in for soil testing of their fields and use the fertilisers accordingly on soil test basis. UNI
