House panel report on church properties flayed

Special Correspondent

  • Charge on disposal of properties denied
  • Government's move to bring in legislation opposed

HYDERABAD: Church of South India (CSI) Moderator Bishop B.P. Sugandhar has found fault with the interim report submitted by the House Committee on church properties. The Moderator, who is also Bishop of CSI, Diocese of Medak, told reporters here on Thursday that it was unfortunate that the committee ignored his letter to Chairman Anam Vivekananda Reddy to hear church leaders before submitting the report.

Bishop Sugandhar denied that church properties worth crores of rupees were disposed of illegally as alleged by some `disgruntled' persons within the community. He said some persons had claimed right over church properties spread across 2,000 acres in Nizamabad, Medak, Adilabad, Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.

At another press conference, the Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches expressed reservations over the reported move of the Government to bring legislation to bring church properties under its ambit. "Though we are happy at the Government's concern to protect our properties, we are worried about implications of possible enactment of a law that can have potential to make inroads into church administration," council secretary and treasurer Jetti A. Oliver said.

He admitted there were instances of `collapse of administration due to litigations in some churches.
