THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government and the Association of Private Self-financing Engineering Colleges, in the latest round of talks between the two on Thursday, failed to reach a consensus on the issue of providing freeship to candidates admitted to Government seats. Association president G.P.C. Nayar, who met Education Minister M.A. Baby late tonight, made it clear that it would be extremely difficult to provide freeship this year.
Cites commitment
"I told the Minister that we have already admitted students to our seats by promising K.T. Thomas committee fee. Now we can't charge more. So if we are to give freeship this year to the other 50 per cent of students, we cannot run our colleges in a viable manner," Mr. Nayar told The Hindu. Mr. Nayar told the Minister that freeship could be thought of next year if the Government agreed to allow the managements to charge a higher fee than what was fixed by the K.T. Thomas committee. "I think the Minister understood the practical difficulty. I sincerely hope that the Government would not disturb us this year," Mr. Nayar said. The Minister was told that self-financing medical colleges and engineering colleges must not be treated alike and that the issues involved were entirely different, Mr. Nayar added. "We have agreed that we will hold further talks to reach an agreement on the matter," Mr. Baby said.
