17 convicted in bomb planting case

Chennai: The Special Court in Poonamallee has handed down 4 to 8 years rigorous imprisonment to the accused in the 1999 bomb blast at Victoria Hostel in Chennai and for planting of explosive materials in various places in the State.

Charges were framed against 19 persons, including Abubucker Siddiqu and Mohammed Ali, who were at large. Arunagiri and Rajamani of Tirunelveli, were released on bail. Fifteen persons were detained in the Chennai and Coimbatore prisons.

After hearing the arguments, the judge, Thiyagaraja Murthy, on Thursday handed down 8 years RI to first three accused, Zahir Ussain, Moosa and Siddiqu Ali, 7 years RI to next 12 accused, Amar Farooq, Rahmathullah, Riswas, Sadakathulla, Sheik Moidheen, Thaveez Moidheen, Kaleel Rahman, Abdul Kaleel, Nazar, Akhkeem, Zahir Ussain and Mohammed Kamal, and 4 year RI to those who were enlarged on bail. — Staff Reporter

Life convict escapes from hospital

TIRUCHI: A life convict who was admitted to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital a few days ago, escaped in the early hours of Thursday.

Four special teams have been formed to nab Basheer (40). The teams have been instructed to conduct checks in various places including Erode where he worked for some time as well as at Papanasam in Thanjavur district.

According to police sources, Basheer was involved in a murder for gain case in Kumbakonam West Police station limits in 1994 and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002. He was lodged in the Central Prison here in 2002.

He was admitted to the hospital on August 26 after he complained of health problem. A police constable was on escort duty when he gave the slip. — Staff Reporter

Couple hacked to death

VIRUDHUNAGAR: A couple hailing from Udumalpet was hacked to death by a landlord over a quarrel at Mamsapuram in the wee hours of Thursday.

The police said C. Mahalingam (41) pulled up the couple for not turning up for work in his sugarcane farm.

The couple was engaged in some other farm. In a wordy duel, Mahalingam hacked them to death, the police said. Later, he consumed pesticide and was admitted to a hospital at Srivilliputtur. — Staff Reporter

Special trains for

Durga Pooja

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run special trains to clear extra rush of passengers in connection with Durga Pooja.

Train no. 202 Guwahati - Yesvantpur - Guwahati (weekly) specials via. Chennai Central will leave Guwahati at 6.30 a.m. on Saturdays from September 16 to October 28 and arrive Chennai Central at 4.40 a.m. on Mondays. Leaving Central at 5 a.m. on Mondays, it will reach Yesvantpur at 12.10 p.m. the same day.

Train no. 201 will leave Yesvantpur at 11.55 p.m. on Mondays from September 18 to October 30 and arrive Chennai Central at 9.35 a.m. on Tuesdays. Leaving Central at 10 a.m.

on Tuesdays, it will reach Guwahati at 9.30 a.m. on Thursdays.

The composition of the trains will be 1 AC 2-tier, 1 AC 3-tier, 11 sleeper class, 1 pantry car,

4 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Advance reservation is open, according to a Southern Railway press release. — Special Correspondent

Tahsildar among three held on bribe charge

VIRUDHUNAGAR : Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths caught redhanded three persons, including the Sattur Tahsildar Sadanandam, while accepting bribe money at his office on Thursday.

The police said the Tahsildar had demanded Rs. 5,000 to issue a legal heir certificate to K. Hariharasudan of N. Subbaiyapuram. Following a complaint preferred by him, the police laid a trap.

The Tahsildar directed Hariharasudan to hand over the money to his assistant, Allal Kathan. On realising the police presence, he handed over the money to a village head, Thangasamy.

IMFL bottles seized

DINDIGUL : The Prohibition Enforcement Wing police seized 138 bottles, each containing 750 ml of Indian-made Foreign Liquor made in Pondicherry, during a surprise raid at two places here on Thursday. Jayabal of Vazhakapatti and Nagarajan of Dindigul were arrested.

The police raided a hut behind a cinema theatre at Iyyalur and found 70 bottles and checked a house and seized 68 bottles.

`Vande Mataram' sung

RAMANATHAPURAM : The district Seva Dal on Thursday sang `Vande Mataram.' J. Dhinesh Babu, president, presided. More than 100 volunteers of the Congress party sang `Vande Mataram.'

Water level

MADURAI : The level in the Periyar dam stood at 119.1 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 801 cusecs and a discharge of 1013 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 46.39 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 1031 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3632 mcft.

Idayapatti recorded 36.4 mm of rainfall followed by Sothuparai 30, Melur 23.2, Sittampatti 22, Viraghanoor 19, Periyar dam 14, Peranai 13.4, Tekkadi 10, Sattaiyar dam 9.5, Kallandiri 7, Pulipatti, Veerpandi and Bodi 3 each. — Staff Reporter

Job fair conducted

Udhagamandalam: A job fair organised by the ICFAI National College (INC) and the District Employment Office at Theetukkal near here on Wednesday evoked good response. According to the head, INC, the Nilgiris, Malini Pande, about 50 graduates attended the preliminary screening, which included aptitude and computer proficiency tests apart from interview. The names of the shortlisted candidates would be sent to various companies for a final interview. She added that the INC offered a two-year full-time campus-based management course at the end of which placement assistance was provided. - Special Correspondent

Body found

Udhagamandalam: The body of a 25-year-old man was found in a pine forest at Thalaikundah near here on Wednesday. Stating that murder was suspected, the police said that it had been identified as that of Vetrivel, a tailor of Ratnapuri in Coimbatore. A special team has been sent to Coimbatore for further investigation. - Special Correspondent

Coimbatore: Over 300 students from schools in and around Coimbatore have registered for the drawing and slogan writing competitions conducted by the Department of Ophthalmology, PSG Hospitals, to mark Eye Donation Day.

Ganja seized

Tuticorin : The police seized ganja and liquor bottles from different parts of the district during raids on Wednesday.

According to the police, Syed Mohamed and Abubacker were arrested with 3.3 kg of ganja from near the Kayalpattinam bus stand under Arumuganeri police station limit.

They were transporting it in a moped, which was intercepted by the team.

Meanwhile, Rajaiah was arrested for illegal possession of 15 brandy bottles at Siganthakurichi.

Jewels stolen

Tuticorin : Some unidentified persons entered the house of Mary Stella (51) at Tharuvaikulam and allegedly took away 6.5 sovereigns of jewels. According to a complaint lodged by her with the Tharuvaikulam police, the thieves broke open the front door, while she was fast asleep, and took the jewels.

In another incident, one person allegedly trespassed into the house of Thangamuthu (38) at Murappanadu and took away Rs.5,000.

Last date extended

TIRUNELVELI : The last date for submission of filled-in applications for convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University has been extended up to September 20, the Controller of Examinations, N. Arunachalam has said in a statement. — Staff Reporter

Man murdered

TIRUCHI: A 45-year-old man was murdered at Thandalai near Musiri in the district in the wee hours of Wednesday. Rangaraj was allegedly attacked with an aruval by one Srinivasan of the same village. A wordy quarrel broke out between the two on Tuesday night. When Rangarajan had just left home in the early hours of Wednesday, Srinivasan attacked with an aruval, killing him on the spot.

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.95 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 8,097 cusecs, and the outflow 12,042 cusecs.

Youth killed in accident

ERODE: Mahesh (30) of Murugampalayam, near Arachaloor, was killed on Thursday when a bus proceeding to Tirupur from Erode collided head-on with the car in which he and his friends were travelling, near Karukkampalayam, on Erode-Tirupur highway. He died on the spot, the Perundurai Police said. In the incident, a few of Mahesh's friends were injured. They are under treatment. A case has been registered in this connection.

Schoolteachers honoured

ERODE: Makkal Sindhanai Peravai, a thinkers' forum, on Wednesday celebrated Teachers' Day by honouring Govt. schoolteachers who helped their institutions secure cent per cent pass, both in secondary school level and higher secondary level. Prof. Tamizhanban said teachers should be students' role models for them to emulate.

Rice seized

SALEM: The food cell personnel on Wednesday seized 102 bags of rice meant for distribution under the Public Distribution System. They were found hoarded in a house at Dadhagapatti. - Staff Reporter

OMALUR: A few unidentified men decamped with jewellery from a house here on Tuesday night.

SALEM: A member of the executive committee of the ward 60 unit of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Mani, was killed on the spot when a lorry hit the motorcycle in which he was travelling. for two

SALEM: The Principal District Judge, A.J. Muruganandam, sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for their involvement in a murder case.

The prosecution said Manivel of Nangavalli and his brother Subash hacked their aunt Rukmani (50) to death following a family dispute in June 2005. - Staff Reporter

SALEM: A 14-year-old schoolgirl, Thilakavathi of Nanjampati, who was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital with burn injuries died here on Thursday.

The Ammapet police said Thilakavathi immolated herself in her house.
