Special Correspondent

Releases "Poorna Pradakshina" dedicated to Poornchand Gupta, founder of "Dainik Jagran"

NEW DELHI: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Thursday said that newspapers have a greater responsibility of not only highlighting the problems of the people but also paving the way for their just and fair solutions.

Speaking at a ceremony after releasing a commemorative volume "Poorna Pradakshina" dedicated to the memory of Poornchand Gupta, freedom fighter and founder of Hindi daily "Dainik Jagran", he said that newspapers should be in the forefront of creating awareness about a number of issues facing a substantial chunk of the country's population that was still struggling to make both ends meet.

"Though the government is also doing its bit for improving the lot of underprivileged sections, it is the duty of the newspapers to see that benefits reach down to all sections of the society", Mr. Shekhawat said. Paying glowing tributes to Poornchand Gupta, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that veteran journalists like him had worked tirelessly for betterment of the society and the country. Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, Jagran group chairman Yogendra Mohan Gupta, Dainik Jagran's Editor Sanjay Gupta and Rajya Sabha members Rajiv Shukla and Chandan Mitra were among those present on the occasion.
