Uttaranchal
Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN: The Central Bureau of Investigations will probe the sub-inspectors recruitment scam that rocked Uttaranchal two years ago. Disclosing this here on Thursday, State Home Department officials said that the Centre had given its assent for the probe requested by the State Government. Initial enquiries by the State police machinery had revealed alleged tampering of computer records by a Director-General and an Additional Director-General of Police. A number of unsuccessful candidates had petitioned the High Court in Naini Tal alleging that persons who had scored much less than them had been selected after increasing their marks in the final stages. The Government seized the original marks computer data on the court's orders from the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee that had conducted the exams and corresponding records at Police Headquarters. A comparison showed that the marks of several candidates had been increased in the computer data copy of the Police Headquarters. The Government had suspended and later reinstated Rakesh Mittal, Additional D-G, and relegated the then Director-General of Police, Prem Dutt Raturi, to the rather insignificant post of DG Rules and Manuals. The services of seven sub-inspectors whose marks were found to have been tampered with were terminated.
