Thrust on minor irrigation projects, says Minister

  • Rs. 1,00,000 crores to be spent for irrigation
  • A major chunk earmarked for Telangana region

    MAHABUBNAGAR: Minister for Forests, Environment and Minor Irrigation S. Vijayaramaraju has said that minor irrigation sources would be developed on par with major irrigation in Mahabubnagar district by spending Rs. 4,000 crores.

    Foundation laid

    He was addressing a public meeting after laying foundation stone for a tank with project cost of Rs. 1.13 crores taken up under RIAD, a new project at Reddypuram village in Madgul mandal on Thursday. The Minister said that the Government was keen on spending Rs. 1,00,000 crores on irrigation sector in the State, of which a major chunk was earmarked for Telangana region. He said that among Telangana districts, Mahabubnagar was the most backward and drought prone and so, development of irrigation projects would be taken up there on a priority basis. The Minister further said that Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has undertaken yet another programme RIAD (Remote and Interior Area Development) and crores of rupees were being provided under the programme.

    Project report

    The Minister informed that roads, safe drinking water, irrigation, electricity, health and transport facilities would be developed in rural areas under RIAD project. He asked the officials to complete the new irrigation tank within the stipulated time and ensure water for irrigation by next kharif season. Local MLA Yadma Kishta Reddy presided. District Collector V. Usha Rani said that RIAD programme would be implemented in the selected 59 remote and interior villages covering 14 mandals. A project report detailing the works identified under RIAD and funds required would be submitted to the Government soon.

    Zilla Parishad chairperson K. Damodhar Reddy also spoke. Among others, Bhasker Rao, senior engineer of irrigation also participated.
