Protest against bank merger

KOCHI: The United Forum of Bank Union said the decision to merge the Lord Krishna Bank (LKB) with Centurion Bank should be called off and a public sector bank should take over the LKB. A convention would be organised on Saturday at the AIBEA Hall against the move. The union called for an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the present condition of the LBK. The employees and officers of the LKB were on an indefinite strike. The convention would begin at 3 p.m., a union release said - Staff Reporter

Yogasana championship

KOCHI: The district Yogasana championship would be held on September 21 at Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara. The decision was taken at the general body meeting of the District Yoga Sports Association at the District Sports Council Hall here recently. The State-level championship would be held at Changampuzha Park, Edappally, on September 24. The association protested against the move to remove yoga competition from Mahatma Gandhi University's sports competition. The meeting also elected K.J. Sohan as president and L.B. Suresh Menon as secretary of the association. - Staff Reporter

Beyblade contest

KOCHI: Pai & Company and Funskool will conduct a Beyblade championship on Saturday at PaiCo's M.G. Road showroom. The competition is open for students up to Class VIII. KOCHI: Capital Market Certification course and NCFM Certification course conducted by the Capital Market Institute of the Cochin Stock Exchange will begin from September 11. Students' society

KOCHI: A group of students of social work at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, and the undergraduate students of sociology in Sacred Heart College, Thevara, started a society, Hi Hights Students Social Welfare Association, to help the poor and under-privileged students in the State through educational fee sponsorship. The organisation plans to raise funds to meet their objectives by conducting inter-college cultural festival. - Staff Reporter

Hunger strike

KOCHI: Railway porters here went on a hunger strike on Onam day demanding reinstatement of their jobs and stop privatisation of various services of the Railways. The porters at the South station started the strike on September 1. On September 5, their family members joined a hunger strike. The strike was inaugurated by Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar. General secretary of the Licensed Porters Federation K.M. Ali Akbar and others spoke on the occasion. - Staff Reporter
