Woman `poisons' daughter, kills herself

Staff Reporter

Harassment for additional dowry

HYDERABAD: Unable to withstand the alleged torture by her husband, a labourer, for additional dowry, a woman killed her four-year-old daughter before ending her life at Gaganpahad on Wednesday, the Rajendranagar police said.

Neighbours grew suspicious since the woman M. Janata, 27, and her daughter Manisha, 4, did not come out of their single-room rented house from morning to evening on Wednesday. They saw the woman and her daughter lying unconscious after peeping in through the window.

As the doors were bolted from inside, they broke open the single brick wall of the house and rushed them to hospital where doctors pronounced the mother and child dead. Hailing from Mahbubnagar district, Janata got married to Venkat Reddy seven years ago. They had two children.

According to Rajendranagar Inspector Ch. Srinivas, Reddy and his mother Adilakshmi had been pestering Janata for additional dowry. "This drove her to poison her daughter to death and later kill herself in a similar fashion," he said on Thursday.
